FIU Alumnus selected as Vanguard

Peter Smith, Policy Adviser with the U.S. Social Security Administration, has been selected as one of forty young urban leaders to participate in this week’s 5th Annual Vanguard conference in Chattanooga Tennessee.   Now living in his hometown of Baltimore, Md., yet a great booster of Miami and FIU, the Magic City will be well-represented!

Peter Smith

You can follow Peter and the Vanguard conference on Thursday and Friday April 24-25 at #Vanguard14.

Smith is an attorney, economist, urbanist, entrepreneur and man of ideas.  At the Social Security Administration, he is working on cross-agency open data and information sharing collaborations.  He is also founder of Condesa Union, a public interest law firm providing legal services to help Baltimore-based entrepreneurs launch their businesses.

A proud graduate of FIU undergrad and our College of Law, Smith is a leader of our FIU in DC Alumni Chapter and serves on the College of Law Alumni Chapter board.  As part of the recent IREAL strategic visioning discussion, Smith submitted white papers on FIU’s role as urban change-maker; and our entrepreneurial culture.

(Washington Programming note: Smith and the FIU in DC Alumni Chapter looks forward to convene a discussion this Fall on the transformation and future of our hometown;  and how Miamians in the nation’s capitol can engage in catalytic ways.  Stay tuned!)

More on Vanguard and Next City: (credit: Next City)

Vanguard is an annual gathering of the best and brightest young urban leaders working to improve cities across sectors, including urban planning, community development, entrepreneurship, government, transportation, sustainability, design, art and media.

Each year, Next City selects 40 applicants — whose bright ideas for cities, experience in the field and ambition for the future all show great promise — to become members of the new Vanguard class. Along with alumni, host committee members and Next City staff, Vanguards convene to collectively learn and think about how to tackle the challenges our cities face.

Next City is a non-profit organization with a mission to inspire social, economic and environmental change in cities by creating media and events around the world. Our vision is for a world in which cities are not in crisis, but are instead leading the way toward a more sustainable, equitable future.

Next City provides daily online coverage of the leaders, policies and innovations driving progress in metropolitan regions across the world. In addition to our online journalism, we produce events, including the Vanguard conference.

After hosting Vanguard conferences in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, St. Louis and Cleveland, Next City is pleased to present the fifth annual conference in Chattanooga, Tenn., where a host committee of local urban leaders has played an integral role in shaping this unique event.
